In eastern Sicily, in the area of Chiaramonte Gulfi, there is a farm with 9000 olive trees, and between them, caper bushes, lemon, orange, and almond trees, and a scattering of wild asparagus. An organically produced monocultivar of Tonda Iblea olives.
On this simple and natural farm, the olives are hand-picked and pressed within 12 hours. The resulting oil is intensely fruity, golden-green. It is moderately spicy and has the aroma of green tomatoes and freshly cut grass. This complex oil nicely enhances soups, beans, salads, fish, and meats.
Over the past decade Pianogrillo has received numerous awards including Gran Menzione at SOL/Vinitaly (2001, 2003, 2004, 2005), International Olive Oil Award, Silver (Zurich, 2006), Cibus 2003 "Leone d'Oro" Award, and L.A. County Fair Extra Virgin Olive Oil Awards International, Gold Award (2006).
