Outstanding. Planeta extra virgin olive oil comes from the noted DOP Valle di Mazara. This area is in western Sicily, running north to south, just east of the coastal zone Valli Trapanesi. If you look closely at the necktag, you can see the map of Sicily with the zone marked.

Previously, produced only for family, Planeta has been bottled for sale for just over 10 years. They’ve made great strides and certainly produce a top-quality unfiltered extra virgin olive oil, with both DOP certification and notable awards. This selection received a 95 point rating from Flos Olei! Silver Medal (Robust) winner at Los Angeles, April 2012.

The family grove, Capparrina, is situated on fertile land by the sea near Menfi, in the province of Agrigento. Planeta is composed of Nocellara del Belice (50%), Cerasuola (30%) and Biancollila (20%) olives.

We found the intense aroma and flavors to be herbaceous, with elements of citrus, artichokes, and tomatoes. The flavor is full and layered with a spicy-peppery finish.

Recommended pairings include tomatoes and mixed salads, grilled vegetables, firm cheeses, and even a topping for vanilla ice cream. (If you have time, make olive oil ice cream).
