New from the area of Messina is Sangaspano from modern-day family with historic origins. The family producer of Sangaspano has sent the son to Georgetown University just a short drive from our offices. Ferdi is studying tax law at Georgetown. Keeping the family interests and traditions in mind, he brought Sangaspano to us.
The family, Marullo di Condojanni, has aristocratic roots in Sicily and has held the farm for more than 200 years. The farm is located in the area of Valle del Mela on the north coast near Messina. On a map you'll find Messina to be the area of Sicily that is closest to the toe of Calabria.
This oil will be soon certified DOP since the estate is located within the DOP Valdemone.
The farm grows the Sicilian bounty of oranges, lemons, and olives. The olive trees are those of the traditional cultivars of the region, Nocellara Messinese and Biancolilla. The olives are hand-picked, then pressed quickly at low temperature, with mechanical methods. In our tasting, we found it to be medium fruity, with notes of almond, and a bit of a peppery finish.
Traditions: Serve with stewed white beans, Chicken Marsala, Caponata, or a salad of shaved fennel, fresh orange slices and capers.
