description

Outstanding. Planeta extra virgin olive oil comes from the noted Valle di Mazara. This area is in western Sicily, running north to south, just east of the coastal zone Valli Trapanesi.

Once produced only for family, Planeta has been bottled for sale for just over 20 years. They’ve made great strides and certainly produce a top-quality unfiltered extra virgin olive oil, with both IGP certification and notable awards.

The family grove, Capparrina, is situated on fertile land by the sea near Menfi, in the province of Agrigento. Planeta is composed of Nocellara del Belice (50%), Cerasuola (30%) and Biancolilla (20%) olives.

This selection includes (1) a blend of the three olive cultivars, (2) Denocciolato Biancolilla, and (3) Denocciolato Nocellara del Belice. Denocciolato is the name for de-stoned oil, where the olives are pitted before pressing.

The blend: We found the intense fruity aroma and flavors to be herbaceous, with elements of citrus, artichokes, and tomato leaf and even herbs such as flat leaf parsley and sweet basil. The flavor is full and layered with a moderate spicy-peppery finish with nutty almond notes. Minimal bitter characteristics.

Recommended pairings include tomatoes and mixed salads, grilled vegetables, firm cheeses, and even a topping for vanilla ice cream. (If you have time, make olive oil ice cream).

Biancolilla monocultivar: This is the Bianocolilla monocultivar selection. We found it to be delicate and sweet with notes of carob, almond, and white pepper.

Recommended pairings include tomatoes and mixed salads, grilled vegetables, firm cheeses, and light, fresh pasta preparations. Lovely with pasta and ricotta.

Nocellara del Belice: Our notes include a lovely green color with yellow-lime hightlights. The scent features well-balanced basil and citrus. Elements of tomato and artichoke.

Recommended pairings include mixed salads, as well as salads featuring fennel and oranges. Excellent with grilled meats and vegetables.(If you have time, make olive oil ice cream).
