Olio Verde Novello 2013 Harvest
Gianfranco Becchina has produced an exceptional Olio Novello, always rich, luscious, grassy, and peppery. We are holding the line and pricing this at last year's price with exceptional discounts for quantities of six and 12.
Olio Verde Novello was pressed and bottled during 7 - 16 October 2013, while the weather was warm and sunny.
Notes from the Frantoio:
Color: Dark olive, sage-tone, with strong golden highlights. Reflections of Sicilian sunshine?
Flavor notes: freshly cut grass, artichokes, tomato skin, and subtle aromas of banana peel. Plus elements of strong olive fruit and white pepper.
Texture: Rich, velvety with a well balanced spicyness in the finish.
Gianfranco Becchina's 1998 award winning oil repeats again with the 2013 Harvest with this outstanding Sicilian oil. Yellow-green color, smooth taste, unfiltered. Limited quantities. The oil is produced at the estate of Prince Pignatelli at Castelvetrano in Sicily using the Nocellara varietal. The 100% Nocellara del Belice olives are hand-picked from the trees. An exceptional oil.
Traditions: Drizzle over grilled tuna, stewed white beans, polenta, roasted peppers and garlic or a salad of shaved fennel, fresh orange slices and capers. Drizzle over soup. Make breakfast special with a drizzle over poached eggs, or a stir into scrambled eggs.
According to Deborah Krasner in "The Flavors of Olive Oil", Olio Verde is "...beautifully colored and winsome estate-grown artisanal oil from Southwestern Sicily is nutty and herbal, with complex taste nuances."
A tradition of excellence. 2012 harvest, Silver Medal winner, Los Angeles 2013.
Review of 2012 Olio Verde: Made by Gianfranco Becchina in Castelvetrano, southwestern Sicily, from his own nocellara di Belice olives (so-called because they look like round green walnuts, noce in Italian). Dated 2012, from a very early harvest that began in late September, this pure-bred Sicilian oil has an almost Tuscan flavor profile; rich green fruit flavors, well-balanced with a spicy retrogusto." –Nancy Harmon Jenkins, ZesterDaily.com, 2.12.13
